Award-winning classical pianist Olga Stezhko, jazz trumpet icon Byron Wallen, London’s maverick microbrewery Partizan Brewing and illustrator Alec Doherty create a feast for the senses crossover event in the heart of Shoreditch. In the spirit of the turn of 20th century Paris, some of London’s brightest talents in classical music, jazz, craft beer and illustration join forces and bring Debussy’s music to Hoxton Square to mark the centenary of the composer’s death.
Debussy’s groundbreaking explorations in rhythm, colour and tonality were partially inspired by traditional Indonesian gamelan music that he heard during the World Fair in Paris in 1889. Olga Stezhko is thrilled to collaborate with Byron Wallen, one of the most innovative and versatile trumpet players in the world. They put together a programme of Debussy's pieces from Olga's solo album 'Et la lune descend' which will be launched on the night. For this concert Byron has written gamelan music that is directly inspired by Debussy's original works and Olga's unique interpretations. Byron will lead his rarely heard gamelan ensemble through piano-gamelan-trumpet interpretations of Debussy's pieces highlighting the meeting point between Western and Southeast Asian cultures.
It will not only be a feast for your ears but also your taste buds. Echoing the themes from Olga's album, Partizan Brewing – one of London’s most creative microbreweries - will fuse French and Indonesian flavours in a limited edition #debussybeer named ‘Doctor Gradus’. Alec Doherty’s distinctive and award-winning artwork will feature on the beer label.
The event will be hosted by Zigfrid von Underbelly - a Shoreditch original and institution in itself. This independent bar and live music venue will open its doors to classical sounds for the firrst time since its establishment 15 years ago.
